"Midweek and Pondering a Question" Pastor Cindy's Devotion 03/27/2019

Hello everyone,
I like a good question.

“Who do you say that I am?”  “Do you want to be made well?”  “Do you love me?”

Those are questions Jesus asked.  A good question reaches into our souls, demands something of us.
I heard a good question this week.

On Monday our church council endorsed the statement:  “Come as you are.  We honor and welcome the diversity you bring.”  Everyone found that to be an acceptable statement, something that everyone at WDMUMC could live with.

And then someone asked a good question: “Is it true?”  Do we honor and welcome diversity?

Do we welcome the scruffy, the poor, the smelly, the child who misbehaves, the person whose accent makes their English difficult to understand, the tattooed, the other?

And if we welcome, how far does our welcome go?  Do we share our name?  Do we ask for theirs?  Do we invite them to sit with us?

And what about honor?  Do we honor diversity to the point that we look at our programming and habits and ask if what we are doing honors the diversity of others?   Do we regard diversity as a way of expanding the kingdom of God?  Do we see diversity as a gift that gives us the opportunity to grow in our ability to love others?

“Come as you are.  We honor and welcome the diversity you bring.”  Is our statement true or false advertising?  Do we want it to be true?

Jesus asked really good questions.  I think if we look for answers to the questions he asked, we will find an answer to the question that was asked on Monday night.

Blessings,
Pastor Cindy

"Midweek and it's Spring Break" Pastor Cindy's Devotion 03/20/2019

Good morning and congratulations!
Today is the first day of spring!  We made it!  Just to recap:  we just came through weekly snowstorms, two to three feet of snow accumulations, lots of ice, and wind chills that sunk to record lows. We have become experts in dodging potholes.   Add to that a flu season that made its way through just about every household.
And here we are.  Spring.  There are robins in my yard and new green shoots are popping up in the flower beds outside the church.  Tonight around 5:30 there will be a Super Moon, a beautiful way to announce WINTER IS OVER!
So how will we celebrate?
I have some ideas:
  • Tonight join Morganne and crew for the “Left Behind” Pajama Party.  If you were one of the people left behind during spring break come for a little beach party at WDMUMC.  We will have snacks and watch Moana.  Sorry, parents, this is not a drop-off.  You are invited to stay for the fun too.  Anyone know how to hula?  7:30 in the Friendship Room, oops, on Friendship Beach.
  • We are Methodist and Methodists celebrate by helping others.  March 30, April 13 and May 4 we will be remodeling a Habitat House here in our neighborhood.  You can go to https://gdmhabitat.secure.force.com/volunteer/VolunteersJobListingFSC?jobId=a0G6100000IlL5t to sign up.
  • Our Little Pantry is feeding families every day.  The pantry is need of canned fruit, pasta and pasta sauce.  Celebrate spring by putting food on someone else’s table!
  •  An older gentleman on the southside needs help putting his air conditioning in place for the summer.  What a way to celebrate spring—getting the AC ready!  If you like to help, contact me.  This will take a crew of two or three people.
Celebrate a new season!  See you on Sunday!
Every blessing!

"Midweek Devotion: Got a Good Story to Share?" Pastor Cindy's Devotion 03/13/2019

In the last few weeks, lots of people have stopped by my office to share their stories.  I love to hear the stories of what is happening in people’s lives.  We all have these amazing adventures and experiences.

More than that, these stories are sacred.  Its grace that forms us and love that compels us forward.  I think there is a holy design in every life.  And sharing the stories of friendships that are forming, experiences we’ve had, prayers answered and unanswered, even our anxieties, it all reveals our souls.

We have a listening God.  In Psalm 116, we read “I love the Lord because he hears…”  That makes listening a holy act.  When we share our stories, our listening heart takes the shape of a bowl and others pour their lives into ours.  No matter how different we are, even if we have different opinions and ideas, comedy or tragedy, we can meet in the good stories of our lives.

I visit Aunt Ann in the nursing home and it’s the stories that bring healing.

This morning someone said “I didn’t know you had had cancer.”  They listened as I told the story of my cancer.  Afterwards they simply said “wow.”  (There is no wow about my cancer.  I got off easy.)
My granddaughter tells a funny story about a dog she loves and we laugh and that story provides a platform of love.

I bought a manikin on Saturday.  It’s a funny story.

The story of a first kiss.  The story of a camping trip.  The story of a broken leg.  The story of a hometown flood.

A friend becomes a friend, when we know something of their story.

So this Sunday in our morning worship we will share the story of Hagar from the Old Testament.  (The Bible does a very good job of telling stories—lots of suspense and dilemma and human fumbling.)  At our 5 pm worship, (our response to the United Methodist General Conference Decision), we will listen to someone from the Des Moines Story Tellers tell about a time when they were called to courage.  And we’ll talk too, sharing our stories.

Our prayer this year at WDMUMC is Today God, let me faithfully live your story for my life, my church, and my community.  Yes, let us live God’s story and tell it to others.

Every blessing to you,

Pastor Cindy

This week at WDMUMC:
March Madness tonight!  Supper at 5:30 followed by a Basketball Trivia event like you have never seen!  Celebrity experts, cheerleaders, and lots of fun!  Lots of prizes!  Supper is a free will offering with the proceeds supporting neighborhood hunger projects.  Be there!

Mental Health Forum  Dawn G is an activist for Mental Health.  She is a member of our church and this is her ministry.  Tonight at 6:30 she is inviting everyone to a forum to talk about mental health issues and how our church might develop a mental health ministry.  You are invited!

Our Little Pantry needs canned fruit, pasta and pasta sauce.  Can you help?  Our little pantry distributes 35 items a day.  From our hands, to hungry persons to create a healthy neighborhood.  God smiles.

Trip to the Science Center to see the Mental Health Exhibit.  When we know more, we can do more.  The Mental Health display at the Science Center is getting great reviews.  Morganne is taking a group to see it on Sunday afternoon.  Email her at mreinboldt@wdmumc.org if you would like to go.

And next week:  are you one of those people who is not going off to some exotic place for spring break?  Feeling a little left behind?  Morganne is hosting a Tropical Pajama Party on Wednesday evening at 7:30.  We will travel to the pacific as we watch Moana.  Who knows?  Maybe there will even be (non-alcoholic) drinks with little umbrellas in them.  Contact Morganne if you would like a little beach time.

Grateful to be living the story of this church.

"Midweek and Methodist" Pastor Cindy's Devotion 03/06/2019

Today I was leaving the church for a meeting and I ran into Cindy O.  She was bringing in food for tonight’s MidWeek Refuel.  That food and her hard work mean we will all share a good meal tonight and beyond tonight, children in the neighborhood will be fed this summer.  Cindy does this because she is a part of this church, this Methodist church.

That got me thinking about what it means to be a Methodist.  Lots of people are wondering that these days.  In the last few days, lots of people called me or stopped into to share their thoughts and heartache regarding the recent decisions by the United Methodist Church, world wide.  If Methodists are only known by the headlines, then the "Methodist" label is pretty narrow and negative.

I have been a Methodist off and on for more than 30 years.  (In between I have been Presbyterian, with occasional seasons of being nothing at all.)  Since I have been Methodist "on and off," that means that I am now Methodist by choice.  I became Methodist because Methodists have shared their life with me. I have been impressed and inspired.

Here’s what I know about Methodists.

I once moved to a town hundreds of miles away from my home.  It was January, the dead (I mean really dead) of winter.  I did not know anyone in that community.  Within a few days, the phone rang.  It was a woman inviting my family to dinner.  Her husband worked where my husband worked.  She knew we were alone.  And she was Methodist.

Years later, my child would be sick and in intensive care.  This same Methodist woman drove for three hours several times a week to sit with us in the hospital.

A year ago a friend received a diagnosis of kidney disease.  She began dialysis and was placed on the transplant list.  A woman came forward and was tested to see if she could provide a kidney.  Both were Methodists.  They had met only a few years earlier in a Methodist church.

A man had become widowed and he sunk into depression.  Another man kept showing up at this door, refusing to allow him to waste away.  He eventually succeeded in drawing the widower out of his desolation.  The man who refused to abandon his friend was Methodist.

A small group of people passes the hat once a month for the neighborhood school so that all children can have a good lunch.  They have been doing this for 11 years.  They have provided thousands of meals.  They are Methodists.  They gather in a Methodist church.

A woman learned that a youth was struggling with mental health issues.  The woman was elderly and physically limited, but she decided she could write the youth a letter of encouragement.  Once a week she wrote a letter.  Every week, for a decade.  A letter of encouragement that became a lifeline.  The letter writer is a Methodist.

In Joplin Missouri, a small group of people spent a week rebuilding a home and sanding sheetrock after the tornado.  They ended each day covered in sheetrock dust.  They slept on the floor of a church throughout the week.  The house they worked on slowly became a home.  They are Methodists.

An old man noticed that the school children walking by were sometimes bullied by bigger kids.  He sat on his porch in the afternoons when school got out and he called to the kids and the bullying stopped.  He is Methodist.

People gathered coins each week for weeks and finally when they had enough, they sent their coins to Africa where the coins were used to build a well for a small community.  The coin gatherers were Methodists.

Dozens of experiences like these define Methodist to me.  This is the Methodist I strive to be.  Grace is freely given by God.  Grace freely shared with others.  Forward in hope.

So of course, I would run into Cindy O unloading her car, preparing to serve.  That is what it means to be Methodist.

See you at church.

Every blessing,
Pastor Cindy
